Maria IslandFor that special treat we will pack you a picnic and you can spend the day on Maria Island which is a short ferry trip from Triabunna, a delightful fishing village nearby, which has the largest safe harbour on the coast. Maria Island National Park is steeped in history. Its name can be traced to 1642 when Abel Tasman named it in honour of Maria Van Diemen, the wife of the governor of Batavia. The French visited in 1802 and in 1825. The English settled the island as a penal colony seven years earlier than Port Arthur. Many historic buildings and relics from its illustrious past can be viewed on the island. |
